Russian Arctic Convoy Museum

This is a project to develop a museum in memory of those who braved the convoys between Loch Ewe and Russia during the Second World war. Although not quite a museum as yet, the RACM project operates an annual exhibition at Inverasdale school looking at the history, artefacts, and information surrounding these convoys. There is also a cafe. Only open at Inverasdale school on Wednesdays and Fridays from 2pm-5pm from May – October 2016.

On the A832 at Poolewe turn on to the B8057 towards Cove (IV22 2LR) for 5 miles. The school is on the left.

Gardens

Inverewe Gardens are quite stunning. Displaying an impressive array of plants from around the world, they are one of the most famous gardens in Scotland.

The Gardens were originally created by Osgood Mackenzie who died in 1922 by which time his garden had become internationally acclaimed as one of a number of great plant collections which had been developed along our western coast.

The responsibility for the garden passed to his daughter, Mairi Sawyer who saw it through difficult times in World War II and who added many new features and plants.

Inverewe is close to Poolewe in Wester Ross and there are National Trust for Scotland sign-posts on all routes to it. The gardens are open all year.

There is a self-service restaurant, a visitor centre and a gift shop, all open from early spring to late autumn. A large car park is situated close to the entrance to the garden. Disabled people can enjoy a large part of the garden by following a special route.

Attadale Gardens

Started by Baron Schroder in the late 19th century, Attadale Gardens include hill paths meandering through 20 acres of conifers and rhododendrons, along with many low level walks and attractions.  Totally transformed after the 1980 storms by owner Nicky Macpherson, it is an artist’s garden designed to frame the magnificent views of Skye and the surrounding hills. Waterfalls, Monet bridges, meconopsis, bamboo and candelabra primula are reflected in dark pools.
